October 11th 2009

Kangiqsualujjuaq was the host of the Nunavik Adventure Challenge. Young Inuit athletes competed in a spectacular aventure race course, including biking, kayaking, rope section and trekking. Each team was composed of two persons who have to navigate with a road book and a map to find check points which are necessary to complete the challenge.

To the surprise of the organisers they had forty-two local athletes registered for the race, which broke the capacity of a single start, so it was decided to split the race in two groups.

The beautiful sunshine gave an ideal start for the prolog which gives racers and non-racers, like kids, a chance to run on a small course in the center of the village.

At ten o’clock, motivated racers from the first group opened the course on bike to reach the first check point at a surprisingly speed. Shortly after the reached the transition to change from bikes to kayaks in a fly. After paddling the course of 1200 meters they hiked up the steep slope to gear up for the zip line. With fun and speed they zipped over the lake, down to the opposite shore. Then they started their long hard trekking back to the village were they had to conquer two mountains, gnarly bushes, mossy rock slabs, steep slopes and swampy sections.

Last part of the run going down, village in view, teams arrived at the community hall for the well deserved finish.

At the end of the day, all teams were able to complete the Nunavik Adventure Challenge and were celebrating their success with proud.

The team Amaruit with Meeki Snowball and Elijah Etok finished with the best time of 01:16:48 hour. The first feminine team, Sinuupa, with Rhoda Snowball and Saladie Snowball  finished in a time of 01:41:40 hour. This team also won the best spirit award.

The organisation congratulates all racers and thanks the Kangiqsualujjuaq community for their help to make this event a great success.

Saturday, October 10th

The morning session this morning was very specific to Sunday's race. The group went on a orienteering course in order to practice their compass skills. It was good to see the older help the younger to understand how that tool works.

The part of the team was in meeting all day in order to finalise all the details concerning Sunday's race.

The rest of the team was outside preparing the course and placing all the markers and check points at the good place.

Everybody in very anxious to see the race tommorow.

Friday, October the 9th

This morning, we woke up with strong winds whistling in the windows.  Around noon, it started to rain with winds still blowing strongly at around 50 km/h.

We had a team exploring new trekking paths.  It was a hard day for them with these gusting winds.  At least, the wind was in their back when they came back.  On top of the montains, they had their first snow flakes and of course, the most spectacular view of the Georges River you can get.

Some meetings were held in order to set up the race for Sunday.  This morning, we finalised  the course for the race.  It was decided to include trekking, kayaking, biking and ropes and to have 2 tents on the course to shelter the staff and volunteers in case of bad weather. The tent will also act as a feed station for the athletes with tea waiting for them.

The afternoon was use to finalize the technical aspects of the race, such as estimating the time require for the race, how many and where volunteers are needed, the assigment of responsibilities for the race.

All the bikes were fixed and the necessary adjustments made so they will be ready for the race.

The rope team installed a short absailin and offered a training session in the afternoon.

In the evening, after diner, The KRPF Cadets organised Inuit games.  After a demonstration of Drum Dance and Throat Singing, a contest of “One Foot High Kick” and other games was organised. 3 people made id up to 225 cm.

Pat

Thursday, October the 9th

Another very nice day, as yesterday, sunny with some clouds in the afternoon.  The temperature was a little colder.

A team made of 6 local guides and some members of our crew left town by bike, going along the Ungava bay and then, up in the montains for 15 kilometers.  They left their bikes and hiked for 4 kilometers.  The reached a river made by men.  This river was made to control the level of the water in the lakes.  Unfortunately, this river is not suitable for kayaking.  They returned to their bike and got back to town by the same road.  All along the way, they had great spectacular views of the area.

The rope team installed and tested a 100 meters zipline at the spot they found yesterday.  They also expore some other spots for easier absailins and ziplines.  In the afternoon, they installed the absailin as yesterday.  Some local people tried it.  This absailing is quite suitable for a long race, but too difficult for the Sunday race. We will have to have an easier one for the race that will stand on Sunday.

Panorama

Some of our crew members hicked to the top of the montains between the town and George River.  On the crests, there is a great view of the Ungava bay and the Gorge River mouth getting into the Bay.   We can also see the line made by the high-tide going against the comming flow of the river.

In the afternoon, we offered a training session on bikes for the participants of the race that will stand on Sunday.  We used all our bikes and some others local peoples came with their own bikes.  They biked for 1 ½ hour on a path going up in the montains.  They showed us that they are in great shape and have a very good technique.  They were quite dare devil, going down hill.  The showed their great habilities with montain bikes.

Kan

After diner, as yesterday, we had short races with the chidren, on our way to the Community center.  There, we had great fun playing with the children.  They realy like to play and are not shy to talk and make funny jokes on us.  Later on, young girls offered a demonstration of their traditionnal Drum Dance and their Throat Singing.  They were quite impressive.  The Throat Singing is a competition where two girls stand facing each other.  Together, they start to produce rythmic sounds comming deep from their throat and the one who stands the longuest time wins.  The other one is eliminated and the last one to remain is the winner of the competition.

Wednesday, October the 7th.

We had a very nice day, sunny in the morning, with some clouds in the afternoon.  The goals for the day were to explore the region and discover nice and spectacular spots for the organisation of an adventure raid.  We also planned to offer an afterschool activity for the children.

Kan

The crew splits itself in three teams, each team exploring for a specific discipline: bike, kayak and rope.  Local guides completed each team and their great knowing of the region had been very helpfull.

Rope
The team, explored the town for a good spot for a zipline for the children.  They found a perfect place, right behind the school.  Then, they went to explore some cliffs, not to far from the town, to evaluate the feasability to install an absailin and a zipline.

They found the right cliff and installed  a 70 meters  absailin.  The clift has an interresting particularity.  On the top of the clift, the participants can't see the wall and the bottom of the clift.  They will only see deep down in the valley, some 90 meters lower, not knowing exactly were the absailin ends.  They installed and tested the absailin that had also been tested by local guides.

After school, the children enjoyed the 25 meters zipline installed behind the school.  The activity last nearly 2 hours.  It was amazing to see the smiles of the children going down the zipline.  As soon as they got down of the zipline, they  rush to go back in line for another tour.  We greatly appreciate the collaboration of the KRPF cadets who helped us in this activity for the children.

KANJ

Kayak
We left the kayak team at Mivivinik Lake.  The team tested a path, going through five lakes, with portages between each lake.  The team went faster than expected.  The vegetation doesn’t grow very high.  The carrying was almost always on rock, without great difficulties.  The only thing that slow down the team was the blueberries they found along the way!

The water in the lakes is very clear and proper to consumption.  The guides said that there is 20 inches trouts in those lakes.  On top of the hills, the team had a very spectacular view of the region, seeing many lakes all around.  It was quite windy, which is normal for this time of the year.

Bike
The team explored a path along the Ungava Bay and another one between two lakes.  The trail sections were interresting, but the sections between trails were inappropriate for biking since they had to push or carry their bikes in those between sections.  In fact, they walk nearly half the way it was planned for the bike section.

The TV crew made an interview with Charlie Annanack who happen to kill a polar bear 2 days ago.  Charlie and his friends were hunting carribou and they got in their boat to rest a while.  But has they were sleeping, the tide was going low and the water under his boat retired.  Their boat got stuck on the ground.  They woke up seeing a young white bear just beside them.  Charlie just had time to shout the bear with a small 22 riffle before the bear got to him.

Tonight, comming back from diner, we improvise a short run with many children. In 2 minutes, there was around 30 kids rrunning with us. It was very pleasant to run hear the laughs of all these kids.
